Surgical Excision and Ligation
Ligation (tying off) and division of a vein above a varicosity (swollen vein) and excision of varicosed veins (stripping) are carried out on enlarged tortuous veins that cause great discomfort. The procedure will prevent oedema, ulceration, pain and fatigue in the affected leg.
The procedure will generally take 40 to 60 minutes and is usually under general or local anaesthetic in hospital.
The procedure is a day procedure and you should be discharged in the afternoon. You are will have a bandage on your leg after the procedure. After 2 days you will change to a compression stocking. You cannot drive home afterwards.
It is recommended you do not fly for four weeks after surgery. Your risk of deep vein thrombosis is increased directly after vein treatments.
Most procedures are covered by Medicare, for public patients, and no gap with private health providers. Please ask for a quote with your specific item numbers to check before confirming your procedure. Not all venous treatments are suitable for all patients.
All other medical appointments with our surgeons are bulk billed. This includes initial consultation, follow-up consultation and ultrasounds. You may have an out of pocket cost for medical compression stockings.
